What? Seriously? Do something nice for someone and don't tell a soul- not even them! In our hyper-connected world where everyone seems to be posting their best "everything," the concept of not sharing every detail of our lives seems counterintuitive and maybe a little weird.
I invite you to come along with me on a childhood memory journey...
When I was little, maybe around 10-11 years old, I was fortunate to spend quite a bit of time with my grandparents. One holiday season, while having lunch at a local restaurant with my grandmother, I watched as she mentioned to the server that she'd like to anonymously pay the bill for a family sitting across the way from us. I had never seen anything like that before and of course, was all kinds of inquisitive about what she was doing, why she was doing it and who the people were.
As much as I pestered, she wouldn't tell me whose meal she was paying for (probably so I wouldn't give it away). After we left the restaurant my grandmother explained to me that she liked to do that sometimes to bring unexpected joy to people and to possibly help them in some small way. My grandma made no more comments about it that day and never mentioned it again. I found myself wondering how many other times she had done something similar and had never told a soul. I was in awe of her quiet generosity and was forever changed.
To tell you that I've followed my grandmother's example would contradict the entire point of this story. I'll let that remain a mystery. I share her example of anonymous kindness and generosity to keep the butterfly wings of anonymous kindness and generosity flapping.
So here is this week's suggested challenge and reflection:
Do something good. Tell no one! Don't share it, post it, tweet it, snap it, nothing. Repeat.
Until next time, be well.
